About this school:University of Rhode Island Feinstein College of Continuing EducationProvidence, Rhode Island, United States
'' Every semester, some 4,000 adult students enroll at URIs Alan Shawn Feinstein College of Continuing Education (ASFCCE) with one goal: they want to change their lives. Some are starting or completing undergraduate degrees interrupted years before. Others pursue certificate programs or post-graduate studies to further their careers. Some pursue their studies at the college, some through on-site programs at their place of employment. Eighty percent work full-time, thirty percent are single parents, and almost all juggle the multiple responsibilities of work, family, and school.
Since its founding in 1942, ASFCCE has been dedicated to fulfilling the unique needs of adult students in the state of Rhode Island. URI Feinstein Providence Campus was started during World War II to assist state industries engaged in war production, and develop services for industry and business. URIs extension into the city soon made it the regional leader in adult continuing education.
In 1996, a new era began for the college when the campus relocated from its longtime home near the State House to the historic and beautifully restored Shepard Building in downtown. Visit the Feinstein Providence Campus today and youll witness lifelong learning at work. Youll find older adults pursuing masters degrees and preschoolers, in our Child Development Center (CDC), building with blocks while their parents attend class.
Also, with URI receiving designation as an urban grant institution, the Feinstein Providence Campus has become a major provider of outreach and community services, as well as arts enrichment programs.
In 1996, Alan Shawn Feinstein provided an endowment to fund scholarships for adult learners at ASFCCE that also provided for their children to attend the campus Child Development Center, realizing that many adult learners need this kind of support to be successful. In recognition of his wide-reaching support of ASFCCE and URI over the years, the college is now named the Alan Shawn Feinstein College of Continuing Education.
At ASFCCE, we are proud to see our students make positive changes in their lives through education. We are also proud of the Providence Campus and the colleges role in the revitalization of downtown Providence as we help bring people to Rhode Islands capital city for education and enrichment. ...''
