All courses leading to a Certificate in Translation prepare you in the theory and practice of translation. You will develop skills to write accurate translations of the original text preserving its integrity, meaning, style and nuance. You will become proficient in critically analyzing, comprehending and correctly translating the complex structures and communications of real-world documents. Most assignments require translation from English to the selected language. These are not courses in language acquisition. Students must already have mastered the principles of grammar and composition in English and the target language.

Introduction to theory, methods, and techniques in translation applied to materials of various fields and professions. Emphasis on written translation.

Our French courses for specific purposes are mainly, but not exclusively for adults who need to use French in the context of their professional activity, now or in the future. Whether you are a complete beginner or already quite proficient in French, whether you are a CEO, an executive, an employee, a student or a technician, you will find a suitable course from among those we offer: Professional French, Scientific and technical French, Business French, Initiation to translation.

The objective of the course is to sharpen the knowledge of French through translation activities using excerpts of technical and legal documents as well as newspaper articles and the like. Level requirement: B2 This course is aimed at students who have reached B2 level or who have already attended over 500 hours of French. They should also have an excellent command over the English language.

Approach: Using a good bilingual dictionary, students will be assigned translations tasks in French and in English alternatively, which they will prepare at home, for correction in class. Elements of methodology of translation will also be taught through these practical activities.

In this course, students translate from English intro French various materials on topics ranging from the francophone world to international issues. The class focuses on how to translate questions, words, idiomatic expressions, and full sentences involving advanced level (B2) grammatical syntax structures. Students perfect their understanding of the transcription of an original French audio and video excerpt through back translation.

In this course, students:
o Improve translation skills from English into French
o Review French grammar and syntax structures as compared to English
o Listen to French original excerpts and improve their listening comprehension
o Learn about spoken French and idiomatic expressions in context.

The Bilingual Translation MA is open to you if you are a non-native speaker of English and your first language is Arabic, French, German, Italian, Polish, Russian or Spanish. It will prepare you for a career in translation from English into your first language of specialised technical and institutional texts, and translation (for information purposes) of similar texts from your first language into English.

You will learn how to research specialised subjects and to produce commercially usable translations of specialised technical and institutional texts, applying insights drawn from the study of linguistics and translation theory as well as from professional practice. You will complete a Translation Project or a Research Thesis. You will also be able to choose from a range of option modules that will, for example, give you an introduction to editing and revision, film subtitling or computer-assisted translation.

The undergraduate Spanish major is a liberal arts program that aims to develop skills in critical thinking, written expression and oral proficiency in the Spanish language. The major should provide a depth of understanding of and an appreciation for the Spanish language and literary tradition and the multiple cultures that the language represents. In addition to the basics of the program, skills in translation and interpretation are included.

It is designed to serve students who plan to enter the learned professions or pursue other career paths that require perceptive reading, orderly and clear thinking, intellectual maturity, effective writing and acceptable oral communication as well as the ability to interpret speech and translate documents from one language to another.

It is designed to establish habits of broad spiritual thought and appreciation that will provide a source of life-long personal betterment and service to the extended community in a general sense and in a specific sense professional service in translation and interpretation between Spanish and English.

The Certificate in Spanish Translation Studies is a 15-hour option in Spanish graduate studies with its primary focus on the language skills necessary to perform translation. Translation is defined as the rendering of a written text from a source language into another, while interpretation is the rendering of spoken language from a source language into another. Although this program will focus on the former rather than on the latter, both draw on the same type of general linguistic skills as those gained by studies in literature, language, and culture. This certificate focuses more closely on their practical applications in modern day life than the more comprehensive M.A. in Spanish does, with a total of 36 hours. In addition to meeting university-wide admission requirements, either as a special graduate student or a degree-seeking student in a graduate program, all prospective students must pass a written entrance exam in both languages to determine linguistic competence and general cultural preparation.
